DSG dual-clutch gearboxes – called S tronic in Audi models – are used throughout the Volkswagen Group. The most common are the seven-speed dry-clutch DQ200 with smaller engines and the wet-clutch DQ250 and DQ381, alongside Audi's S tronic DL501 and DL382. Before replacing anything, we check whether the fault lies with the clutch or mechatronic unit, or whether an adaptation is all that is needed.
Our DSG gearbox services
Juddering when pulling away or changing gear
A worn clutch can cause juddering, but so can a faulty mechatronic unit or a gearbox that needs an adaptation. We use diagnostics to find the cause rather than replacing parts by trial and error.
Limp mode and gearbox fault codes
We read the gearbox control unit's stored fault codes and live data. Typical codes include P189C and P17BF on the DQ200, and P17D8 and P174B on the S tronic DL501.
DSG gearbox oil change
We change the oil in all DSG and automatic gearboxes, replacing the filter where the gearbox design includes one and carrying out an adaptation if the gearbox requires it.
DSG clutch replacement
We replace dry clutches in the DQ200 and wet clutches in the DQ250 and DQ381, and carry out an adaptation after replacement. We check the dual-mass flywheel before quoting.
DSG mechatronic unit
We diagnose mechatronic units and carry out adaptations in-house. Repairs are carried out by a specialist workshop: you leave the car with us, we organise the whole repair and carry out an adaptation once the unit is refitted.
Audi S tronic
We also service S tronic DL501 and DL382 gearboxes: we change the oil and filters, and carry out a gearbox control unit adaptation when needed.
DSG service prices
Labour prices for standard jobs. Non-standard repairs are quoted once we have inspected the car.
Service Price ListClutch, mechatronic unit or adaptation?
Similar symptoms can have three different causes. A worn clutch slips or judders when pulling away. A fault in the mechatronic unit – the gearbox's control module and hydraulic system – causes pressure fault codes, limp mode and loss of gears. Sometimes an adaptation is enough: this lets the control unit relearn how to engage the clutches. That is why we start by reading fault codes and gearbox data. A new clutch will not fix a faulty mechatronic unit, and vice versa.
We cover typical DSG faults in specific models on our Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda and SEAT service pages. Our car mechanic replaces clutches in manual gearboxes.
Questions about DSG servicing
How much does a DSG gearbox service cost?
Prices for diagnostics and automatic gearbox oil changes are in our price list. The cost of a DSG oil change or clutch replacement depends on the gearbox and the car, so we give you a quote after diagnostics, before any work begins.
My DSG judders – what could be wrong?
The most common causes are a worn clutch, a faulty mechatronic unit or a gearbox that needs an adaptation. When the juddering happens – when cold, when pulling away or when changing particular gears – can give us a clue, but diagnostics are needed to confirm the cause.
How often should DSG gearbox oil be changed?
Volkswagen specifies periodic oil changes for wet-clutch DSG gearboxes, while the dry-clutch seven-speed DQ200 has no scheduled oil change. We will check the interval for your gearbox by VIN.
Do you repair DSG mechatronic units?
We diagnose mechatronic units and carry out adaptations after repair; the repair itself is done by a specialist workshop. You leave the car with us and we organise the whole repair. We replace DSG clutches in-house.
Does a DSG need an adaptation after clutch replacement?
Yes. After clutch replacement, the gearbox control unit needs to learn the new engagement points – without an adaptation, the gearbox may judder. We carry out an adaptation after every clutch replacement.
