What our car mechanics repair

Engine, timing belts and chains, oil change

Timing belt due, or the timing chain rattles after a cold start? We replace timing belts and chains of all types following the manufacturer's procedure for your engine code – including the rear-mounted chains on the 3.0 TDI. Engine using oil? We measure consumption and carry out a cylinder leak-down test, replace the crankcase breather or, if needed, the pistons and rings – right through to a full engine rebuild. We fix oil leaks, adjust valve clearances and rebuild turbochargers. Oil and filters are changed according to your car's service schedule, with the service indicator reset included in the price.

Brakes

Squealing brakes, a shaking steering wheel when braking or a soft pedal? We replace front and rear brake pads and discs – on cars with an electric parking brake, we use diagnostics to put the rear brakes into service mode before changing the pads. We rebuild or replace calipers, and replace brake fluid, brake lines and the master cylinder. On cars with drum brakes we replace shoes and wheel cylinders, adjust the handbrake and replace its cables. We also repair ABS sensors.

Suspension and steering

Knocking over bumps, play in the steering or the car pulling to one side? We replace control arms, ball joints, control arm bushes, shock absorbers, wheel bearings, anti-roll bar links and bushes, and rear axle beam and subframe bushes. In the steering system we replace tie rods, tie rod ends and steering rack boots, and we rebuild steering racks and power steering pumps. For electro-hydraulic pumps, such as those in the Fabia I and II, we arrange reconditioning at a specialist workshop. Wheel alignment is carried out at our Nowa Huta workshop.

Clutch, gearbox and drivetrain

Clutch slipping, juddering when pulling away, or knocking from the dual-mass flywheel? We replace clutches – including wet and dry DSG clutches – and clutch master and slave cylinders. We change the oil in all automatic and DSG gearboxes, replacing the filter where the gearbox design includes one and carrying out an adaptation if the gearbox requires it. We diagnose and adapt DSG mechatronic units and arrange any repairs at a specialist workshop – see our DSG service page for details. We service 4x4 drivetrains – Haldex oil and filter, rear differential oil and transfer case oil – as well as CV joints and drive shaft seals.

Cooling and fuel system

Engine overheating, coolant disappearing, or a diesel running rough and smoking? We replace the thermostat, water pump, radiator, heater matrix and expansion tank, and flush the cooling system. We recondition and replace fuel injectors and injection pumps.

Diagnostics and pre-purchase inspections

Before we replace a part, we confirm the fault. We run computer diagnostics and measurements: compression, oil and fuel pressure, intake leak test, CSS cylinder balance test and a CO2 test that detects a leaking head gasket. Buying a used car? See our pre-purchase car inspection page.

Service Price List

VAG specialists, repairs for all makes

Most of the cars we repair are from the Volkswagen Group: Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT and Cupra, including sporty Audi S and RS models. We know their TSI and TDI engines, DSG gearboxes and the typical faults of each generation, and have timing locking tools and a dial gauge for VAG engines. We run computer diagnostics on them – and on models from 2020 onwards we use the official SFD unlock needed for coding and adaptations.

We follow the manufacturer's repair procedures. We don't carry out improvised engine modifications, remove DPFs, EGR valves or swirl flaps, or modify control unit software.

We also repair other makes – Toyota, Ford, Opel, Renault, Kia, Hyundai and more.

Turned out to be an electrical fault? Our auto electrician will take care of it. Clogged DPF? See DPF cleaning. Problem with the EGR valve or silencer? See exhaust repair.

Questions for our car mechanic

How much does a car repair cost, and do you charge for diagnostics?

Labour prices for standard jobs, including diagnostics, are in the price list. Yes, diagnostics is charged – it means reading the control units and taking measurements, so parts aren't replaced by trial and error. You get a free quote for your repair – including parts – before we start, and we don't do any extra work without your consent.

How often should timing belts and chains be replaced?

According to the manufacturer's schedule for your specific engine – there is no single figure for all cars. For example, on 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines from the EA288 family the belt is replaced every 210,000 km, while older engines have shorter intervals, often with an age limit as well. A timing chain has no fixed interval: it is replaced when it stretches, which shows up as noise after a cold start and timing fault codes.

Should the water pump be replaced with the timing belt?

If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, we recommend replacing it at the same time. Getting to the pump requires the same dismantling, so a pump failure after a belt change means paying for the same labour twice.

How often should I change the oil: every 15,000 km or on LongLife?

Volkswagen has two options. Fixed service means an oil change every 15,000 km or once a year. Flexible service (LongLife) is set by the car's service indicator, up to 30,000 km or 2 years, and requires LongLife-approved oil. If you mostly drive short trips around town, it's worth changing the oil more often.

Do you change the oil in DSG and automatic gearboxes?

Yes, in all automatic and DSG gearboxes. We replace the filter where the gearbox design includes one and carry out an adaptation after the oil change if the gearbox requires it. Volkswagen specifies periodic oil changes for wet-clutch DSG gearboxes, while the dry 7-speed DSG has no scheduled oil change. We'll check the interval for your gearbox by VIN.

My engine is using oil – does it need replacing?

Not always. First we measure oil consumption, carry out a cylinder leak-down test and check the crankcase breather (oil separator). Depending on the results, we replace the breather or the pistons and rings, or carry out a full engine rebuild if necessary. If you prefer to replace the engine, we can do that too.

Does the dual-mass flywheel need replacing with the clutch?

Not always. LuK, which makes dual-mass flywheels, recommends checking the flywheel first – its play and noise – because the starter motor, for example, can cause similar symptoms. We check the flywheel before quoting so it isn't replaced unnecessarily.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Volkswagen recommends the first change after 3 years and then every 2 years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid absorbs water, which lowers its boiling point and makes the brakes weaker under hard braking.

Can you inspect a used car before I buy it?

Yes. We read the fault codes from all control units and inspect the car on the lift, with additional tests such as a compression test if anything looks doubtful. Our pre-purchase car inspection page explains exactly what we check and how much it costs.

Do you carry out routine car servicing?

Yes, we service your car according to the manufacturer's schedule. The work required – for example, oil, filters, spark plugs and fluids – depends on the car's mileage and age. This is not the same as the periodic roadworthiness test carried out at a vehicle inspection station.

Will you reset the service indicator after an oil change?

Yes. Resetting the service indicator is included in the oil change price.

Does servicing outside the dealer network affect the manufacturer's warranty?

No, as long as servicing follows the manufacturer's recommendations and uses parts of matching quality – that is what EU vehicle repair rules say. Warranty repairs are still carried out by an authorised dealer.
