DPF warning light: what it means and when a regeneration drive can help
DPF warning light on? Find out when a regeneration drive can help, what a flashing glow plug light means in VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT cars, and when to book diagnostics.
DPF warning light on, car losing power or the filter regenerating more often? We check how much soot and ash is in the filter and why it is clogging, then run a forced regeneration or arrange cleaning.
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from diesel exhaust and burns it off on its own from time to time. When this fails, there are three options: computer-forced regeneration, filter cleaning or replacement. The right choice depends on what has built up in the filter and why it is clogging, so we start with computer diagnostics and an inspection.
We read the fault codes – P2002 and P2463 are common examples – and check how much soot and ash the engine control unit calculates is in the filter.
Depending on the model, regeneration may be accompanied by a higher idle speed, the fan running after the engine is switched off and an inactive start-stop system. If this happens more and more often with similar driving, something is making the filter clog faster.
A faulty EGR valve, injector or pressure sensor can make the filter clog faster. Without fixing the cause, a clean filter will soon clog again.
Ash from engine oil stays in the filter permanently. When too much has built up, the filter needs to be removed and chemically cleaned.
Labour prices for standard jobs. Non-standard repairs are quoted once we have inspected the car.
Service Price ListForced DPF regeneration is carried out in-house using a diagnostic tool. It helps when the filter holds mostly soot and the filter load and condition of the system allow it. During regeneration, the temperature in the filter reaches around 600 °C. This often cannot be achieved on short journeys around Kraków, so the filter cannot complete regeneration on its own.
DPF cleaning is needed when too much ash has built up in the filter. Soot and ash deposits are chemically removed in a dedicated machine. A Bosch Service workshop does this for us: you leave the car with us, we remove the filter, arrange the cleaning and refit it.
Replacement is the remaining option if the filter core is cracked or melted.
Our car mechanic repairs injection faults, our auto electrician handles sensors and wiring, and our exhaust repair service covers silencers, catalytic converters and EGR valves.
Prices for forced regeneration, cleaning, and filter removal and refitting are in the price list. The total depends on the car and whether forced regeneration is enough, so we start with diagnostics. You get a quote before we start work.
If only the DPF warning light is on and the car drives normally, a regeneration drive is usually enough. VW and Skoda handbooks specify at least 15 minutes at a speed of at least 60 km/h, at 1,800–2,500 rpm. Conditions may differ on other models, so your own car's handbook takes precedence. If the light stays on after such a drive, book a diagnostic check. If the glow plug light is also flashing or the car loses power, do not attempt regeneration: call a workshop or your breakdown assistance provider to establish whether the car can safely be driven there. Our article on the DPF warning light explains the steps.
The DPF warning light, loss of power or limp mode, and increasingly frequent regeneration, which may be accompanied by a higher idle speed, the fan running after the engine is switched off and an inactive start-stop system.
Regeneration burns off soot while the filter is still fitted to the car. Cleaning also removes ash from engine oil, which cannot be burned off, and requires the filter to be removed. Diagnostics shows which is needed.
No. A car must meet emission standards, and at the Polish vehicle inspection the inspector checks that the factory emission control devices are in place and working, and reads the OBD fault codes. The police can retain the registration certificate of a car that does not meet environmental requirements. We do not remove DPFs or catalytic converters, and we do not blank off EGR valves.
